Commercial Driver License

Effective May 1, 2014, the District of Columbia, Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), will begin issuing a REAL ID Commercial Driver License (CDL). The REAL ID commercial driver license will replace our current commercial driver license and requires a one-time re-validation of source documents when you renew your DC commercial driver license. This re-evaluation will enable the DC DMV to ensure your identity, current residency and issue a federally compliant REAL ID commercial driver license. The new requirements will affect what you will need to bring to the DC DMV office when renewing your expiring commercial driver license. To renew your CDL, you must visit the Brentwood CDL Office located at 1205 Brentwood Road, NE, Washington, DC 20018, Tuesday – Saturday, 8:15am – 4:00pm.

Driver License

The REAL ID driver license requires a one-time revalidation of source documents when applying for or renewing your DC driver license. This evaluation will enable the DC Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to ensure your identity and issue a federally compliant REAL ID driver license. The new requirements will affect what you will need to bring to the DC DMV office when applying for or renewing your driver license or identification card. First time DC applicants and existing DC driver license holders should expect to provide source documents as proof of identity (full legal name and date of birth), social security number, lawful presence in the United States, and current residence in the District of Columbia when applying for a DC REAL ID driver license.

The Limited Purpose driver license also requires a one-time validation of source documents when applying for your DC Limited Purpose driver license. The driver knowledge and road tests will be required for all applicants applying for the Limited Purpose driver license.  First time DC applicants must be a resident of the District of Columbia for at least 6 months. Applicants must have never been issued a social security number; or previously issued a social security number but no longer eligible; or not eligible for a social security number. The Limited Purpose driver license may not be used for federal purposes. You must schedule an appointment to obtain a Limited Purpose driver license. Prior to your DMV appointment, be sure to study and review the Driver Manual.

To obtain a Limited Purpose Driver License you must take and pass a knowledge test, skills road test and meet eligibility requirements. You must schedule an appointment to obtain a Limited Purpose learner permit. Prior to your DMV appointment, be sure to study and review the Driver Manual because you will be required to take a knowledge test.

Get It Right the First Time!
All source document must be an original unless indicated otherwise or a certified copy marked with a state or municipal seal. Any document that doesn't meet this requirement or appears altered or falsified will be deemed invalid and you may be required to submit additional documents.
Important Notes:
  • There is a fee to obtain a temporary tag.
  • Altered titles are not accepted. If the title is altered, you are required to obtain a replacement title.
  • Additional documents are necessary to obtain a title for a vehicle if an individual acquired it through the death of the vehicle owner
  • Although a title can have multiple owners, the primary owner must be a District resident or a DC based business. If a vehicle has a co-owner, and the co-owner is not a DC resident, you are required to present the co-owner’s valid photo identification, along with the signed Certificate of Title Application.
  • Salvage Vehicle(s) must pass emission and auto theft inspection.

An individual applying for a Limited Purpose Driver License or Limited Purpose Identification Card must provide one (1) source document from the list below. DMV will NOT accept documents, that are not listed below, to satisfy proof of identity and date of birth.

Note: A document that is being used as Proof of Ability to Drive or Proof of Social Security Number cannot also be used as Proof of Identity.

An individual applying for a Real ID Commercial Driver License or Real ID Non-Domiciled Commercial Driver License must provide one (1) source document from the list below. DMV will NOT accept documents, that are not listed below, to satisfy proof of identity and date of birth.

Note: If you have a name change due to marriage or a court order, you are also required to bring (in addition to the above documents) your marriage certificate or court documents to show proof of your name change.

Note: A DC Real ID commercial driver license are valid for up to eight years for US citizens and may vary for non-US citizens depending on visa classification and duration of stay.
